UWC Maastricht was founded in 2009 as the merger of two existing international schools, International School Maastricht, and the International Primary School Joppenhof. It follows the model of offering the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma within the context of a larger school, providing students of other ages the opportunity to gain a UWC experience. The introduction of the IB Middle Years Programme enhances the internationality of the whole academic programme.

Campus and facilities
The school is situated on the existing International School Maastricht campus, situated in the east of the city. A new campus is being built and will open in 2013, Facilities on the current campus include modern classrooms, science labs, fully equipped music and art rooms, a computer lab, an IT equipped study centre, two gyms, one with a climbing wall, and a canteen. By 2015, UWC Maastricht will educate 950 students, 200 of whom will be selected by UWC national committees on scholarships. Residential students live in spacious accommodation in the centre of the city centre.

Beyond the classroom

All students at the school are involved in the community service programme and are given responsibility for organising their own community service projects. Education in global issues is integrated into the curriculum from the early Primary School years. Most students travel to school by bicycle, very much a part of Dutch culture.
